One of EMwA’s key strategic directions is Capacity Building, which aims to build the capacity of midwives and other health professionals and partners (Health and Teaching Institutions). Some of EMwA’s capacity building activities include:
EMwA / UNICEF Project
EMwA launched a major new project with UNICEF at the 22nd EMwA General Assembly held in Addis Ababa on December 27 and 28, 2013.
The project, entitled “Reduction of maternal and newborn mortality through improving Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) in Ethiopia,” is committed to facilitating and providing master trainers to deliver a 3 week course on BEmONC training for 1024 health workers from 512 facilities over a two year period. EMwA also facilitates post-training follow up and support to participants.
In consultation with Regional Health Bureau’s, EMwA also set a strategic goal to select and train 2 health workers from each health centre on BEmONC. During the 2013/2014 financial year this equated to the facilitation of 24 training sessions throughout the country, with 16 participants at each training session, resulting in 384 health workers completing the BEmONC training.
HRH – Human Resources for Health Project
The HRH Project is a 5 year (2013-2017) USAID funded project led by Jhpiego, an international, non-profit health organization, and implemented by five partner organizations including EMwA, Management Science for Health (MSH), the Anesthesia Association, Open University and Jhpiego. The aim of the HRH project is to ‘address key human resource shortages to achieve maternal, neonatal and child health goals.
As an association representing Ethiopia’s maternal health professionals, EMwA’s role in the HRH project is to:
- provide leadership, training and support to maternal health professionals for continued professional development;
- promote practical regional and community best practices and technical expertise;
- use our reach and established role in the Ethiopian health care system to scale-up HRH programs
In April 2014, with funding from UNFPA, EMwA began rolling out a comprehensive family planning training program. This Training has made significant contributions in building the capacity of health professionals & Health Extension Workers (HEWs) on Long Acting Family Planning methods, particularly on Implanon. This training compliments the national efforts made in reducing the unmet need for family planning services at community level and strengthening the referral linkage between HEWs and Health professionals.
There were 3 phases of the Implanon project, the first of which was the delivery of a family planning sensitization program for both Amhara and Oromia regions. This resulted in rolling out 22 sensitization workshops at which a total of 645 health professionals were involved as participants (333 from Amhara & 312 from Oromia regions).
The second phase of the program provided TOT (Training of the Trainer) workshops to health professionals from the Amhara and Oromia regions. These workshops included Implanon insertion and removal training for health professionals nominated from respective zones and woredas of both Amhara and Oromia regions, resulting in a total of 358 health professionals being trained in the projects 1st quarter (198 from Amhara & 160 from Oromia regions).
The third phase of the Implanon Insertion training was focused directly on HEWs. These HEWs were nominated from respective woredas of both Amhara and Oromia regions. At the completion of this rollout training a total of 1022 HEWs were trained (557 from Amhara region and 465 from Oromia region).
Professional Development: Resource Mobilization Training
As a professional association EMwA recognised the need to make adequate preparations for resource mobilization to be effective and ensure we are maximizing all opportunities. EMwA therefore committed to developing a resource mobilization strategy, action plan and implementation business plan that is aligned with our vision, mission, and goals. If an organization is well-managed and conveys its key strategic directions effectively to its target audiences, it will be more successful in raising resources, and this, in turn, will contribute to the organization’s continued growth.
Resource mobilization training for project staff, core staff, national board members and regional chapter office board members was held in Adama from September 19 - 23, 2013. The resource mobilization action plan for EMwA was one of the key outputs of the training. The training also paved the way and provided the knowledge and skills for the development of organizational resource mobilization strategy and business plan.
