Oromia’s 23rd Anniversary of the International Day of Midwives celebrated


Oromia’s 23rd Anniversary of the International Day of Midwives celebrated in Oromia Regional State, on May 16, 2015, at Berhe International Hotel, Asella. The event organized by the Ethiopia Midwives Association (EMwA) in collaboration with Minister of Health (FMOH) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), JHPIGO, USAID, ICAP and WAHA. More than 200 people participated, drawn from different parts of the oromia region. Participants include midwives, representatives from health training institutions, EMwA partners and members, as well as staff from EMwA's eleven chapter offices located around the country.


International Day of the Midwife in Ethiopia - a day for honoring midwives and strengthening partnership


WHO donates a vehicle to Ethiopian Midwives Association.The International Day of the Midwife was celebrated globally on 5 May 2015 and commemorated in Ethiopia on 7 May 2015 with the theme, “Midwives for a better tomorrow.”With the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) coming to an end in September 2015, this is indeed a special year to highlight the role of midwives in the achievement of MDG 4 and in the progress towards the achievement of MDG 5 in Ethiopia. The recognition of midwives this year is key also in light of the world’s move to the UN Sustainable Development Goals beyond 2015.


Sandoz & EMwA provide training for 100 healthcare professionals

New Life & New Hope, a Sandoz corporate responsibility program, is committed to sponsoring four Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care trainings for 100 healthcare professionals, or midwives, in Ethiopia. The trainings of these 100 midwives will impact the care of approximately 40,000 pregnant women in the Addis Ababa area. The trainings are facilitated by the Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA).
